Little Thicket Park
Little Thicket Park was a comprehensive redevelopment of a 1.7-acre community space that was transformed into a vibrant hub for recreation and leisure. A great addition to the City of Houston’s park system, the design thoughtfully integrates essential infrastructure with diverse amenities to serve residents of all ages, with key features that enhance connectivity, supports play and fitness, provides comfortable gathering spaces, and promotes sustainability.
Connectivity anchors the visitor experience. A quarter-mile of new concrete trails winds through the park, forming a vital pedestrian link between 24th Street and 22nd Street and inviting the surrounding neighborhood to move easily through the space. Along the way, the park offers something for everyone: a sprawling 5,200-square-foot playground gives children a safe and engaging place to explore, while outdoor fitness equipment and a fully resurfaced basketball court keep adults active and encourage community sports.
For comfort and social gatherings, the park has a 350-square-foot shade pavilion, and site furnishings such as picnic tables, benches, bike racks, a drinking fountain, and trash receptacles to ensure convenience throughout the area. Sustainable infrastructure was addressed with an underground detention system to effectively manage stormwater and protect the park’s landscape and its surroundings. The result is a well-rounded community space where practical infrastructure and inviting amenities come together to serve the people who use it every day.
