St. Cecilia’s Catholic School is a 2.5-acre private institution for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade students in Houston’s Hedwig Village. An open space master plan introduced conceptual design ideas and programming options that embraced the school’s guiding tenets. Now fully realized, these enhancements transform the campus with a landscape that thoughtfully integrates amenities that cater to both education and recreation.
Aging playground structures, fencing, concrete pathways, existing utilities, and worn site furniture in the main courtyard were demolished to make way for new exterior spaces such as outdoor classrooms and Stations of the Cross, offering unique areas for spiritual reflection and hands-on learning. Picnic and reading nooks encourage quiet study and socializing while the artificial turf event lawn, featuring a gaga ball pit, provides flexible space for play and school gatherings year-round.
An open deck and a shaded, elevated viewing corridor offer panoramic views of the newly enhanced multi-use sports field with bleachers and sail shades for comfortable spectating.
Robust retaining walls address site grading and improve both aesthetics and function. Modern hardscaping reimagines the campus walkways and gathering spaces. A playground provides opportunities for active play and social interaction across age groups, while new brick walls, fencing, and elegant entry gates better define campus boundaries.
