Shell Energy Stadium

Formerly known as BBVA Stadium/PNC Stadium, this multipurpose sports and entertainment facility encompasses a six-city block area in downtown Houston within the TIRZ 15. It was a partnership between the City of Houston, Harris County, the Houston Dynamo, and the Houston Sports Authority. Our design provides a pedestrian-friendly zone from the stadium to the edge of the property. We designed everything outside of the open-air stadium from the hardscape to all softscape elements and the public spaces —- creating a large urban plaza. Our design cues came heavily influenced by the architect’s “mesh” stark angles in the stadium’s façade. We provided artificial grass panels on slopes for low maintenance and heavy pedestrian use. The grading intertwined the concrete with the plants and trees to give an interactive experience with the streetscape. This project is spurring a lot of revitalization in the formally dilapidated East End District.
